Day Trip to Agra / Tajmahal
Agra – The city that created the most extravagant monument ever built for love.
Agra city is a virtual gateway to a world of discovery. It has witnessed the rise of the pomp and pageantry of three great Mughal monarchs – Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan, all of whom lavished on this fabled city, their love and riches to transform the land into one of the greatest centres of art, culture, learning and commerce. Much of the city’s impressive past lives in evidence even today, in the haunting presence inside the monuments and in the majesty of the buildings.
It is said that the world is divided into two parts; those who have seen the Taj Mahal and those who have not.
Taj Mahal - often described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love. It took 22 years to be built and in total 20000 people worked on the Taj. Several experts contributed to the designing of the Taj Mahal such as the Frenchman Austin of Bordeaux and the Italian Veroneo of Venice. The Taj Mahal is amazingly graceful from almost any angle. The semi – precious stones inlaid into the marble in beautiful designs are through a process called "pietra dura".
Tip: Do not engage in a visual or verbal contact with touts near the Taj Mahal.
Important information: Due to security reasons, there are certain personal articles that are not permitted within the complex of the Taj Mahal such as cigarettes, lighters, match boxes, eatables and any sharp instruments.
Red Fort
Within a radius of 3 kilometers, on the banks of the river Yamuna, rises the crescent like Agra Fort. Designed and built by Akbar in 1565 A.D., the fort is surrounded by a 70 feet high wall. It houses the beautiful Pearl Mosque and numerous palaces including the Jahangir Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am and Moti Masjid. Later it was used by his son Jehangir also as the seat of power. Shahjahan modeled his creation, the Red Fort at Delhi on this fort. The Agra fort happens to be on the same bank of the river Yamuna as the Taj Mahal which is visible in all its beauty from one side of the fort. So very ironically, Shahjahan, a prisoner of his son Aurangzeb in his old age was put in a cell from where he could gaze at the Taj Mahal at a distance, from his cell in the Agra Fort. The fort has four gates and is enclosed by a double barricaded wall of red sand stone. Many buildings were constructed within the fort of which very few remain till date. One of the most significant ones is the multi storied Jahangir Mahal built by Akbar for his wife Jodha Bai.
